We feel that Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond has a lesson to teach everyone and we can work with all ages from preschool to college and adults. In addition to school groups, we’ve also accommodated church groups, boy scouts, incentive groups from the mainland, after-school programs, and many many more. Basically, if you have a group and we can fit you in our schedule, we’d be happy to have you!
We can work with small groups of ten to larger groups up to 100 or so people. However, please keep in mind that the larger your group, the more time we’ll need to organize the manpower.
Generally, we offer lessons about Hawaiian fishponds, the history of Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond, lessons about the Hawaiian ahupua`a system and life within and around the fishpond. If your group would like to work on restoring Kō‘ie‘ie’s wall, we can set that up too. (Participants working on the wall will need to sign a waiver in advance.) We also often work in conjunction with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and they can give a presentation about humpback whales, marine science and other marine related topics. The age of your group will determine the detail given during your visit. We are very flexible and can adjust accordingly. Also, for larger groups of 25+, we may break you up into smaller groups and have you rotate through different learning stations so everyone can enjoy all the lessons in a smaller group setting.
Our program is free and donations are welcome. However, we would like the leader of your group to complete a feedback form to give us tips on how we can improve our program and would like to encourage you to write a letter of support in exchange for our services. These letters are extremely valuable when we apply for grants to support the monetary needs of our work. Also, if you schedule your visit and would like to make a monetary contribution, we would be happy to put it towards our programs.
On average, we can work with groups from 1 to 2 hours and may be able to work with you longer if we can set additional lessons up in advance. We typically host groups from 9 to 11 a.m. because the weather is best at this time and this time frame often works well with school and staff schedules.
It is best to schedule your visit at least three weeks prior to your visitation date but if you need to visit us sooner, please call us at 808-359-1172 and we can see what we can do.
